Melchior, Johann Peter

Melchior, Johann Peter. Porzellanmedailleur. ~ 10.3.1747 (Ratingen-)Lintorf, † 13.6.1825 (München-)Nymphenburg.
Ausbildung in Aachen und Düsseldorf. Von 1767 bis 1779 Modellmeister an der kurmainzischen Porzellanmanufaktur in Höchst. Unter M.s Mitarbeit gelangte die 1746 gegründete Manufaktur bald zu überregionalem Ansehen. Gerade als Schöpfer lebensnah gestalteter Kinderfiguren wurde M. zu einem der bedeutendsten Porzellanplastiker Deutschlands. 1779 verließ er die Höchster Porzellanmanufaktur aufgrund ihrer unsicheren wirtschaftlichen Zukunft in den Jahren nach dem Tod des Kurfürsten und Erzbischofs Emmerich Joseph von Mainz. Weitere Stationen von M.s künstlerischem Wirken waren Frankenthal, Mannheim, Nürnberg und schließlich Nymphenburg.
Aus der Höchster Zeit, der künstlerischen Blüte der dortigen Manufaktur, sind rund 300 Porzellanplastiken (Figuren und Geschirre) von M. erhalten. Bis heute beliebt ist die von ihm modellierte Türkenkapelle. 1775 schuf M. ein Gipsrelief des mit ihm befreundeten Goethe, auf dessen Rückseite er die Widmung eingravierte: „Der Verfasser der Leiden des jungen Werthers durch seinen Freund Melchior 1775 nach dem Leben gearbeitet“.
Im Porzellanmuseum des HMF im Kronberger Haus in Höchst sind zahlreiche Stücke von M. zu sehen.
